In July 2005 Ms Mung owned her own small dressmaking shop on Cam Nam Island. Her English teacher had encouraged her to practice English by speaking to tourists whenever they passed by.

One a sunny day while Phil was riding a bicycle he noticed a beautiful Vietnamese girl with a ‘shock of long hair’ cross the road and enter a small corrugated-iron shop. As he rode past the tiny shack a voice from within the shop said ‘Please come in’, and after a few minutes of chatting, Phil asked Ms Mung out on a dinner date, and the rest as they say is history. After dozens of chaperoned dates, Phil & Ms Mung married in September 2006.
